Project OTTO FFY Cafe Racer - Status report, March 2016: more weight, more safety

During 2015, I understood that the choice of the Atax 50mm quill stem, that I mounted on my Otto for its exceptional lightness (210 gr), was counterproductive from many points of view. First, it was too short, and when standing on the pedals uphill I almost touched the handlebar with my knees. Furthermore, the stem was 22.0mm French size, instead of the standard 7/8 inch(22.2mm), so I wasn't sure if it held even when fully tightened. At first, I replaced it with a 3TTT Motus 90mm quill stem, shortening the quill by around 25 mm thus lowering the weight from 290 to around 250 gr. Yet, this stem requires handlebars with diameter of 26.0 or 25.8mm, while my handlebar ha 1 inch diameter. As a consequence, in road test, the handlebar tended to rotate even with theclamp fully gripped. Finally, I acquired a vintage English quill stem by Boyds Bikes, leaving it in its original state, without trying to shorten the quill. Compared with the Atax stem, I have almost 90 grams more weight, but the bicycle is much more enjoyable to drive and, with a 7/8 quill and 1 inch clamp, I benefit of an huge improvement in safety.
