UMMIDK - Una Mosca Molesta Il Dottor K

AFHDK - A Fly Harasses Doctor K

One of the most disturbing and less investigated aspects of The Fly, the 1958 SF movie (whose Italian title sounds like "The experiment of Doctor K", hence I refer to the main character as "Dr.K") is revealed in the final scenes when (with the human protagonist already crushed by an hydraulic press), the human fly, trapped in the spider web, calls for help. It becomes clear that not only parts of the body, but also the mind of Dr. K was divided. Within the fly, there isn't enough human mind to control the insect and bring it back in time to the lab, but anyway full self-awareness, ability to speak and, maybe, ability to remember are present. Then, in each moment, Dr.K is both the human-insect and the fly-man. On this aspect, there is still much room for speculation and investigation. By changing just a detail of the plot, you can conceive a tragicomic scenario: what would have happened if the fly-man had totally resigned to the situation, up to the point of forgetting the human-insect, while the human-insect (who certainly can not maneuver by itself the machinery to reverse the process of hybridization) actively tries to take back its place in its own human body, in its own human life, in its own home? I do not know which scenario is more funny: the fly-man who forgot everything, and can't understand why that hideous fly bothers him obsessively, or the fly-man perfectly aware of the nature and claims of the human insect, but decided to counter these claims by any means: first and foremost, with a fly swatter. This tense confrontation is the subject of a series of immortal graphic works, unique by fine detail and scenic majesty (some of them under four centimeters of size). This set of masterpieces has the title "A fly harasses Dr. K" and, at the request of hundreds of thousands of fans, is now again online on my web pages after some years of absence.
