Propongo un breve resoconto riguardo a un complemento per il mio illuminatore autocostruito a luce diffusa: un set di ripresa in campo oscuro, capace di fornire uno sfondo fuori fuoco di un colore nero compatto. E' una soluzione economica che, basandosi sui primi tentativi, dà risultati discreti. Per la massima chiarezza, fornisco due illustrazioni e alcune foto. Il concetto di base è costruire una "camera scura" sopra la quale il soggetto, tipicamente un insetto, incollato sulla testa di uno spillo, sembri galleggiare nell'oscurità pur essendo completamente circondato dall'illuminazione diffusa, indiretta, fornita dall'illuminatore a striscia LED.

I propose a short report about a complement for my self-built diffused light illuminator: a darkfield photographic set, capable to provide an out-of-focus, solid black background. It's a cheap solution that, based on the first attempts, may provide decent results. For the sake of clarity, I provide two illustrations and some pictures. The basic concept is building a "dark room" above which the subject, typically an insect, glued to the head of a pin, seems to float in the darkness although being surrounded by the diffused, indirect illumination provided by the LED strip illuminator.

Un insetto (o altro soggetto) incollato sulla testa di uno spillo;

Un "piedistallo" dove infilare lo spillo - la superficie superiore del piedistallo deve essere coperta di tessuto nero non riflettente o comunque dipinta di nero opaco. Il piedistallo che uso è illustrato in fondo a questa pagina;

Un "dito" di gomma nera (o dipinto di nero opaco) di idonea dimensione, necessario perché il mio piedistallo è costituito da un piccolo pezzo di tubo metallico - il "dito" sia elimina i riflessi, sia tiene fermo lo spillo. Probabilmente, un piccolo pezzo di plastazote nero potrebbe svolgere la stessa funzione;

Un disco di cartoncino double face (nero di sotto e bianco di sopra), che sarà utilizzato per ridurre il diametro del foro sopra la "camera scura";

Un paio di dischi di cartoncino bianco di diametro ancora minore, che saranno usati sia per rendere l'apertura sotto al soggetto la più stretta possibile (limitando ulteriormente la quantità di luce che può raggiungere la "camera scura", e riflettendo parte dell'illuminazione diffusa verso la base del soggetto, evidenziandone meglio i contorni), sia sopra l'illuminatore per lasciare un foro di diametro il più possibile vicino a quello della parte otticamente attiva dell'obiettivo (limitando la quantità di luce che sfugge dal di sopra, e rendendo il più piccolo possibile il riflesso dell'obiettivo nei soggetti particolarmente brillanti): ovviamente, il foro sotto il soggetto deve rimanere sufficientemente largo da fornire lo sfondo scuro tutt'attorno al soggetto, e quello sopra l'illuminatore deve lasciare completamente libero il campo ottico;

Una "camera scura" costituita da una scatola di cartone, nera all'interno, alta circa 5 cm, e larga almeno quanto l'illuminatore che le sarà sovrapposto.

Components

An insect (or other subject) glued on the head of a pin;

A "pedestal" where the pin will be inserted - the upper surface of the pedestal shall be covered with non-reflective black fabric or in any case painted matt black. The pedestal I use is illustrated at the bottom of this page;

A black (or painted matt black) rubber "finger" of suitable size, needed because my pedestal is made by a small piece of threaded metal tube - the "finger" both eliminates reflections, and keeps the pin steady. Probably, a small piece of black plastazote could carry out the same function;

A double-face (white above and black below) cardboard disc, that will be used to narrow the hole above the "dark room";

A couple of smaller white cardboard discs, that will be used both to make the aperture under the subject narrower (thus limiting further the amount of light that may reach the "dark room", and reflecting part of the diffused illumination towards the base of the subject, whose contours will be more evident), and above the illuminator to leave a hole with a diameter as close as possible to the optically active part of the objective (thus limiting the amount of illumination that escapes from above, and making as small as possible the dark reflection of the objective on particularly shiny subjects): obviously the hole under the subject must be wide enough to provide a dark background all around the subject, and that above the illuminator must leave the optical field completely free;

A diffused light illuminator;

A "dark room" made with a cardboard box, black inside, about 2 inches high, and at least as wide as the illuminator that will be placed above it.

Montaggio
Come da illustrazione e da fotografie. Si infila lo spillo nel piedistallo, il piedistallo nella "camera scura", verificando che il soggetto sporga di almeno due/tre centimetri sopra la "camera scura", si chiude la "camera scura", si pone il disco di cartoncino a due facce con la faccia nera rivolta verso il basso, si ritaglia il secondo disco di cartoncino bianco e si appoggia con cura alla base del soggetto, verificando che sia comunque circondato dallo sfondo nero. Si appoggia l'illuminatore sopra la "camera scura", creando così la "camera chiara", e si restringe l'apertura superiore ritagliando un dischetto di cartone e posizionandolo in modo da minimizzare il riflesso dell'obiettivo, pur lasciando il campo ottico libero.

Assembly
As per illustrations and photographs. The pin is inserted in the pedestal, the pedestal in the "dark room", checking that the subject sticks at least 1 inch above the "dark room", the "dark room" is closed, the double-face disc is placed above it, black side facing downwards, the second cardboard holed disc is cut out, and is placed carefully at the base of the subject, checking that in any case it's surrounded by the dark background. The illuminator is put above the "dark room", thus creating the "clear room", and its upper opening is narrowed by cutting out another holed cardboard disc and putting it the most suitable position to minimize the reflections of the objective while keeping the optical field free.

Ecco due immagini preliminari scattate applicando la mia vecchia Sony Alpha al microscopio Short Unimac (il mio primo esperimento con un adattatore T2 per montare la camera al posto dell'oculare). Non padroneggio ancora la tecnica, ma sicuramente lo sfondo scuro e fuori fuoco è già ben evidente e il soggetto risalta piuttosto nitidamente. Entrambi i soggetti sono lunghi circa 1.5 cm escluse le antenne. Chrysis ignita è la piccola vespa, la foto è realizzata con due Z-stacks di 64 foto ciascuno, composti con Helicon Focus e cuciti con Microsoft ICE. Chrysolina graminis è il piccolo coleottero, la foto è realizzata con un singolo Z-stack di 89 foto. Cliccate sulle immagini per ingrandirle

Results
Here are two preliminary pictures taken by applying my old Sony Alpha to my Short Unimac microscope (my first experiment with a T2 adapter to mount the camera in the place of the ocular). I still don't master this technique, but surely the dark, out-of-focus background is evident and the subject stands out quite crisply. Both the subjects are around 1.5 cm long excluding antennae. Chrysis ignita is the small wasp, picture is made with two Z-stacks of 64 pictures each, composed by Helicon Focus stitched with Microsoft ICE. Chrysolina graminis is the small beetle, picture is made with a single Z-stack of 89 pictures. Click on the pictures to enlarge.
